Sun sun and more glorious sun. We all enjoy a good shine to light up our Lower Mainland day, and it’s always a welcome reality after a long wet fall and winter. However, let us temper the rising temperatures with a cautionary tale of sun exposure and skin damage.
Damage caused by the sun can be irreversible when it comes to skin cancer, so ensuring you are maintaining healthy skin is essential during the current and upcoming sunny months ahead …and at Azure Spa + Medical, we’re here to help!
Rain or Shine – Make SPF Your Best Friend
“Tanning safely” is not a term that holds truth. UVA rays are the suns silent killer, and are the primary cause of skin cancer and wrinkles. They can actually penetrate a clear glass window – such as your vehicle window – if it does not have a UV coating, and UVB rays are what causes sunburn.
Your best defense is to use a sunscreen with a minimum SPF 15 protection, which should be put on 20 minutes before exposure for it to take effect and create necessary protection. Keep in mind though, that your sunscreen will never protect you 100%, so basking in the warm sun for long durations can still be cause for concern.
Sunscreen for Sensitive Skin
For those of you who have sensitive skin, use a sunscreen that uses titanium dioxide or zinc oxide as the main ingredient. This is also a sunscreen that will be safe for babies and children, so long as there is no perfume contained in them.
