Hyaluronic acid – also known as hyaluronan or hyaluronate – is exploding in popularity as one of the most effective ways in which to combat the appearance of aging.
What is Hyaluronic Acid?
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a gel-like water holding molecule. As we’ve discussed in other blog posts, it is able to hold 1000x its weight in water within the cells of your skin, and is known as a space filler and cushioning agent.
Whether acting as a cushioning agent for joints or nerves, hydrating the skin and hair, or filling the eyes (which we will further explain in our next post), hyaluronic acid almost seems like one of those “too good to be true” products …yet it isn’t!
It was discovered in 1934 by Karl Meyer, but gained in popularity more recently after a reporter – who visited a Japanese village in Yuzuri Hara – went to uncover why both men and women in their 80’s and 90’s had smooth wrinkle free skin, flexible joints, full heads of hair, and activity levels that defied their age.
It was reported, that due to estrogen-like molecules in their diet from soya and tofu, this allowed for signals to sent to their cells to make more hyaluronic acid.
Further scientific studies have shown that HA improves skin hydration, stimulates the production of collagen in skin, works as an antioxidant and free radical scavenger, and maintains skin elasticity – giving it a youthful appearance, as seen in those Japanese 80 and 90 year olds.
Although this fountain of youth seems to offer ageless benefits to skin, it also has other benefits we will discuss in our next blog post …when we reveal more about this amazing “miracle agent”.
