Ageing can be a scary thing for many reasons, but one way we can ignore that ticking clock is by working to make our outer appearance look as young as possible. Here are eight ways to help you achieve just that.

Improve Collagen and Elastin Production
As we reach our 40’s, collagen and elastin production starts to slow down. Applying peptides and antioxidants will increase the flow but it’s not enough. As we age, our skin rejuvenation decreases as well, which results in dullness, dryness, fine lines and wrinkles. Products containing retinol are also critical in speeding up skin rejuvenation and brightening your complexion.

Antioxidants and Moisturizers
Products that contain both antioxidants and moisturizing properties will make your skin healthier than ever. They’re a must for everyone, young and old, as they protect the production of collagen and elastin from oxidative stress (an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants) to your skin cells.

Exfoliate Regularly
More so now than when you were younger, and as skin cell rejuvenation has slowed, exfoliating is more important than ever before. The lack of regeneration means you have more dead skin cells present. Professional skin peels are the best for this, but using scrubs and exfoliants are also effective treatments for smoothing out your complexion.

Stay Well Hydrated
While important for your organs and energy levels, drinking a lot of water is also great for your skin. Internal hydration helps your skin to hold onto moisture for longer. This is crucial, as the older we get, the less water are skin can retain.

Don’t Forget Your Neck
The effects of aging don’t just target your face. Your neck is susceptible to showing your age as much as any other part of you. Always apply sunscreen and moisturizer to your neck in upward motions to discourage signs of sagging. If you neglect your neck, it can easily give away your true age, and then what’s the point of all the effort you’ve put in to stay looking young?

Wear Sunscreen
The sun can do awful things to your skin without the proper protection. Daily applications of sunscreen will improve skin over time and keep signs of sun damage from getting worse. Sun protection is the baseline for preserving your skin, as it will minimize sun spots, changes in pigmentation and skin sensitivity.

Get Enough Sleep
Sleeping well, on top of eating healthy and exercising, stimulates blood flow to keep your skin looking plump and healthy. Getting a full seven to eight hours of sleep per night will make your skin look rejuvenated, as our bodies reset while we sleep.

Professional Treatments
Professional skincare has come a long way in dealing with aging skin. Laser treatments like intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy, which gets rid of unwanted pigmentation from sun damage, rosacea, melasma, and broken capillaries, can take years off your skin while preventing further aging. There’s also fractional laser treatment, which minimizes fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged pore and acne scarring, all while improving collagen production to tighten your skin.

However, if a laser has you a bit worries, micro-needling is always an option. It’s safe and available for anyone. Micro-needling creates micro-injuries to the skin’s surface to encourage the skin’s repair system to get moving. This boosts collagen production, something that’s difficult to do as we age.
